“What’s wrong?” Maggie asked Drew as they got ready for bed.

He’d been fine until dinner. Then halfway through, it was like he’d iced his emotions.

“What do you mean, what’s wrong?” Drew’s gaze was too innocent. Too … blank.

“Something happened when we were talking. When you asked about Greg.”

“Funny you jump to that conclusion.” Drew snorted. “Right to Greg.”

“What about him?” she asked.

“How well do you know him?”

“We met while working a CARD case.” An ache filled her belly at the memory.

“Card like in gambling?”

“Child Abduction Rapid Deployment.” She swallowed hard. “Greg was assigned to the team, and I was on loan from New Jersey.”

“You worked together?”

“Yes. It was awful.” She’d assisted with the ransom drop. “The kidnappers got the money but still killed two children.”

“Oh.” It was like Drew didn’t believe her.

“The parents were divorced. The father was tired of paying alimony, so he paid thugs to kidnap his own children.

“Greg got—too involved—with the mother. When he found out the father set everything up, he lost it.” She could still hear the mother’s sobs. “Greg broke the man’s nose and knocked him unconscious. If I hadn’t pulled him away, I’m afraid he would have killed him.”

“That’s a lot of tension.” Drew’s tone was—weird.

“He almost lost his job over it so—yes.”

“Did you end up relieving tension like you and I did in Boston?” His voice was flat. Judgmental.

She jerked. “Are you asking if I slept with Greg?”

His nostrils flared. “Yes.”

“Not that it’s your business, but no.”

Drew relaxed a little. “Then why is he more loyal to you than the Bureau?”

“Because I helped save his career.”

“Oh.” Drew sank to the end of the bed. “Oh.”

She didn’t need this. Hadn’t she told herself taking things to the next level with Drew would be a distraction. “I’ll move to the other room.”

She strode past him.

He caught her hand, stopping her. “I’m an idiot.”

“No argument from me,” she spit out.

He tugged her closer. “I was … jealous.”

“Of Greg?”

He nodded.

“Greg’s like a … a younger brother.”

“I said I was an idiot.” He sighed, wrapping an arm around her back. “In my defense, I don’t think I’ve ever been jealous before.”

“Never? Not even in high school?”

“Never.” His steel blue gaze held hers.

“Wow.” She touched his face.

He grimaced. “Wow, good or bad?”

“I don’t know.” His jealousy was a surprise. “No one’s ever been jealous for me before.”

“Is that because you don’t let people in?”

“Probably.” Direct hit. “But you just push and push.”

“That isn’t like me either.” He stroked her cheek with his finger. “I don’t know what to think.”

She had to warn him—again. “My job comes first, Drew. Or rather my mission.”

“Which is?”

“Protect the innocent.”

Drew slipped her medallion from under her shirt and flipped it over. “For your mother.”

“And for me.” She’d never explained this to anyone. “It’s my purpose in life.”

“I get that.”

She wasn’t sure he did.

But she let him pull her into his arms. Let him kiss her.

She could tell him to stop and Drew would. He may be a charmer, but he was honorable.

Instead, she kissed him.
